In a July 22, 2009 SF Chronicle story titled, State's giant pension funds post big losses, it was reported that CalPERS lost "$56.2 billion in the 12 months that ended June 30, ending the fiscal year with $180.9 billion in assets". It was also reported that the The California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) lost $43.4 billion in the 12 months that ended June 30, ending the fiscal year with $118.8 billion in assets.
